Our Initiatives

Red Rose Trans Movement is dedicated to driving meaningful change and advocating for a more just and equitable future. Discover the core principles that guide our work and the impact we strive to make.

Our Foundation: Survival and Strength

Founded in 2009 from within High Desert State Prison by a formerly incarcerated trans woman, Red Rose Trans Movement is a testament to resilience. For over 28 years, our founder navigated a system that posed extreme dangers to trans individuals. It was within these walls, alongside the inspirational Miss. Major and Alex Lee, that the seeds of this organization were sown. We are abolitionists, believing that systems perpetuating harm against those seeking authenticity are fundamentally flawed and unworthy of support. Red Rose Trans Movement is and always will be operated by Trans Women, for Trans Women, born from the necessity of mutual support when no other aid was available.

Pioneering Leaders in the LGBTQ+ Community

True leadership in the LGBTQ+ community shines brightly through figures like Miss. Major, a beacon of strength and advocacy. We also honor the indelible legacies of Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, whose foundational work paved the way for progress. In the current generation, Miss. Janetta Johnson stands as a powerful example, chosen by Miss. Major to lead TGIJP to unprecedented heights. These leaders, and many others whose names may not be listed here, exemplify the courage and determination that inspire our community. Red Rose Trans Movement draws strength from this rich history of leadership and continues to champion the rights and visibility of all LGBTQ+ individuals.

Decarceration: A Call for Justice

The "War on Drugs," "three strikes" laws, and similar policies enacted in the 80s and 90s disproportionately impacted communities of color, leading to the harshest sentences for Black and Brown individuals. This era of unconstitutional legislation unleashed unprecedented violence against the LGBTQ+ community, often overlooked and undocumented. These laws have not only destroyed countless LGBTQ+ lives but have also eroded the very concepts of justice and rehabilitation. Red Rose Trans Movement stands firmly for decarceration because we have witnessed firsthand the devastating consequences of a carceral system that perpetuates systemic violence, particularly against marginalized communities. Our lived experiences fuel our resolve to dismantle these oppressive structures.

Take Action: Educate and Advocate

We urge you to educate yourselves on the true nature of the Prison Industrial Complex. Question its purpose and demand evidence of its effectiveness in rehabilitation. Recognize that the system often profits from false imprisonment and politically motivated campaigns designed to instill fear. We want you to leave this page feeling informed, perhaps angry, but ultimately empowered with the truth. Reject the narrative of rehabilitation peddled by the Prison Industrial Complex; its true focus is enrichment, not reform. Join us in advocating for a just and equitable society.
